Dremel’s new Blueprint Drill combines 3 commonly used home tools ; A Drill, Level, and Stud Finder

Look, I know what you’re probably thinking – “Another combination drill?!” – but some of them can be quite useful for the right buyer. In the case of this new unit from Dremel, the Blueprint 3-in-1 Drill, a homeowner, renter, or similar could benefit from the space-savings and consolidated kit that this offers.

Spotlight Video by Dremel

Let’s take a look at the three primary features in this overview.

Drill: Well, Yeah, this drill drills!

Dremel.com

First – obviously, this drill can drill. It’s a Brushless Motor 12V Battery tool that can handle most any home task. This isn’t necessarily a drill you’d want to rely on for putting up a fence. If I was is to mount some shelving, put in wall anchors, arrange some pictures- this would be a really handy drill set!

Stud Finder

Dremel.com

Secondly, you would rely on a stud finder in cases where you need to find a stud for mounting a heavier item to a wall. A stud finder is a separate tool that – if you’re like me – can be easily misplaced or in another bag, or maybe you don’t have one. Conveniently, the stud finder on this tool is integrated to the handle guard area. This means all you have to keep track of is the drill body.

Torpedo (Bubble) Level with Laser

Dremel.com

Third, with an integrated bubble level at the base, you can mark your flat line, or mark across several locations using the laser sight to align objects relative to each other. This is a great feature to have right at-hand and will make mounting those items on the wall that much smoother.

What other accessories are included?

Dremel.com

Additionally, the kit comes with driving bits, drill bits, and a charge cable for the 12V battery.

Let’s talk about competition with separate items!

You could definitely find these features in separate tools, and that may be a better fit for you depending on your other tools and accessibility of those tools in your setup/home. This is definitely geared towards ease of tool storage and keeping things together. For comparison, we’ll look at some entry-level tools of similar voltage and/or availability, with some price ranges.

Drill (12V)

A 12V drill can be had from multiple brands, styles, and charging ecosystems. In this market, I would compare this drill to $30-75 drills at big box stores. This range includes 12V and 20V battery ecosystems.

Stud Finder

A stud finder is available with many features such as deep search, pipe detection, etc. which means you have a a plethora of options in this space. I could recommend Stud Finders ranging in cost from $15-35 dollars for most popular options.

Bubble Level w/ Laser

Many options are out there for torpedo levels and laser levels. A typical level with a laser on it is likely in the $10-30 range for this kind of use-case. Keep in mind that this is for a static bubble level with laser like in this kit. A self-leveling laser level device is more expensive, but if you’re constantly finding yourself mounting shelves or similar to walls, is worth considering.

Cost Analysis

Keeping these price ranges in mind, you could find a reasonable Drill, Stud Finder, and Bubble Level separately for approximately $55-140 dollars (without considering drill bits) while the Dremel Combo is MSRP of $99.99 at the time of this post. Considering the consolidated package, the price seems reasonable and the Dremel name comes with a history of reliable DIY products.

Final Thoughts

The Dremel Blueprint 3-in-1 drill is a real nice looking combination kit that offers a nicely consolidated set of tools which can be the go-to for general household tasks like mounting shelving, fixing up some chairs or a table leg, or other similar tasks.

Proper tool maintenance is essential for anyone looking to get the most out of their investment, whether you’re a professional tradesperson or a DIY enthusiast. Tools that are well cared for not only last longer but also perform better, making your work more efficient and safer. In this guide, we’ll dive deeper into five key maintenance practices and provide actionable advice to ensure your tools stay in peak condition for years to come.

1. Clean Your Tools After Every Use

Tools are exposed to dust, grease, and debris during use, which can accumulate and lead to problems like rust, reduced efficiency, or even mechanical failure. Cleaning your tools after every project is a simple habit that prevents long-term damage and ensures they’re ready for the next job.

Hand Tools:

Why Clean: Dirt and moisture can cause rust and corrosion, especially on metal surfaces.

How to Clean: Wipe down metal surfaces with a clean, dry cloth. For stubborn grime, use a damp cloth with mild soap, followed by drying thoroughly.

Power Tools:

Why Clean: Dust and debris can clog vents, overheat the motor, or reduce the tool’s efficiency.

How to Clean: Use compressed air to blow dust out of vents and moving parts. Clean the exterior with a damp cloth, avoiding electrical components.

Bonus Tip:

For tools used in especially dirty environments, like outdoor projects or masonry work, cleaning becomes even more critical. Keep a stiff-bristled brush on hand to remove debris from grooves or textured surfaces.

2. Store Tools Properly

Storage might seem like a minor detail, but where and how you store your tools can significantly affect their longevity. Improper storage exposes tools to moisture, dust, and accidental damage.

Dry and Secure Storage:

Why It Matters: Tools stored in damp or humid environments are more likely to rust or corrode.

How to Store: Keep tools in a dry, well-ventilated area. Use a toolbox, pegboard, or dedicated shelves to keep them organized and off the ground.

Organized Toolboxes:

Why It Matters: Organized tools are easier to find and less likely to be damaged from being piled together.

How to Store: Use cases or tool rolls for smaller tools like wrenches, drill bits, and screwdrivers. Larger tools should be stored in designated compartments to prevent damage.

Bonus Tip:

Consider using silica gel packets or a small dehumidifier in your storage space to control moisture levels, especially if you live in a humid climate.t.

3. Keep Cutting Edges Sharp

Cutting tools, including saws, chisels, knives, and drill bits, are only effective when their edges are sharp. Dull tools not only reduce efficiency but can also cause strain on the material and increase the risk of accidents.

Why Sharpen Regularly:

Sharp edges require less force, resulting in cleaner cuts and less wear on the tool.

Dull tools can slip, increasing the likelihood of injuries.

How to Sharpen Tools:

Hand Tools (e.g., chisels, knives): Use a sharpening stone or file to restore edges. Follow the angle recommended by the manufacturer for consistent results.

Power Tool Blades (e.g., saws): Use a file, grinder, or specialized sharpening tool. Some saw blades may need professional sharpening services.

Drill Bits: Use a drill bit sharpener or grinder to restore cutting edges. Carbide-tipped bits may require professional tools for sharpening.

Bonus Tip:

Keep a sharpening schedule for your most frequently used tools. For example, sharpen chisels or knives after every few uses, and check saw blades monthly.

4. Perform Regular Inspections

Inspecting your tools regularly can help you catch issues early, preventing small problems from turning into costly repairs or safety hazards.

What to Inspect:

Power Tools: Check cords for fraying, batteries for swelling or reduced charge capacity, and motor vents for clogs. Ensure switches and triggers operate smoothly.

Hand Tools: Look for rust, loose handles, or bent components. For tools with moving parts, ensure they operate without stiffness or excessive play.

Fasteners and Joints: Tighten any loose screws, nuts, or bolts on tools and attachments.

When to Inspect:

Perform a quick check before and after each use.

Conduct a more thorough inspection monthly or after a particularly intensive project.

Bonus Tip:

Keep a checklist for inspecting specific tools. For example, note if saw blades need cleaning, power tools require lubrication, or clamps need alignment adjustments.

5. Lubricate Moving Parts

Friction is one of the leading causes of wear and tear on tools with moving parts. Regular lubrication ensures these parts work smoothly and last longer.

Why Lubricate:

Reduces friction and prevents parts from grinding against each other.

Protects metal components from rust and corrosion.

How to Lubricate:

Power Tools: Apply a light, manufacturer-recommended lubricant to gears, bearings, and other moving parts.

Hand Tools: For tools like pliers, shears, or adjustable wrenches, use a few drops of machine oil on pivot points.

Chains and Blades: For chainsaws or similar tools, use a specialized lubricant designed for high-friction environments.

Bonus Tip:

Always wipe away excess lubricant after application to prevent it from attracting dirt and debris.

Additional Tips for Tool Maintenance

1. Use Tools as Intended:

Misusing tools can lead to damage and reduce their lifespan. For example, avoid using a screwdriver as a chisel or a wrench as a hammer.

2. Label Tools by Frequency of Use:

Keep frequently used tools easily accessible and inspect them more often than less-used items.

3. Replace Worn-Out Tools:

If a tool is beyond repair, replace it promptly to maintain safety and performance.

4. Protect Against Rust:

For outdoor tools like shovels, rakes, or axes, apply a protective coating of oil after cleaning to prevent rust.

5. Follow Manufacturer Recommendations:

Always refer to the user manual for specific care instructions, especially for power tools.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Tool Maintenance

1. Neglecting Cleaning:
Skipping even simple cleaning tasks can lead to long-term problems like rust, clogged vents, or reduced tool efficiency.

2. Over-Lubricating Tools:
Excess lubricant can attract dust and debris, creating more problems than it solves.

3. Ignoring Signs of Wear:
Failing to address issues like frayed cords or dull blades can compromise safety and lead to larger repairs.

4. Storing Tools in Damp Areas:
Moisture is a major enemy of metal tools. Even small amounts can lead to rust over time.

Conclusion

When it comes to tackling tough materials like concrete, brick, or stone, a hammer drill is an essential tool for the job. Whether you’re a seasoned contractor, a DIY enthusiast, or a homeowner looking to complete specific projects, choosing the right hammer drill can make your work faster, safer, and more efficient.

This guide will walk you through the key features to consider, common use cases, and tips for selecting the best hammer drill for your needs.

What Is a Hammer Drill and Why Do You Need One?

A hammer drill combines rotary drilling with a percussive hammering action, enabling it to penetrate hard materials with ease. The hammering motion breaks up the material, while the rotary action drills into it, making it ideal for masonry, concrete, and other heavy-duty applications.

Common Uses for Hammer Drills:

Drilling anchor holes in concrete walls or floors.

Installing wall-mounted fixtures on brick or stone.

Creating access points for plumbing or electrical wiring in tough surfaces.

Mixing thick materials like mortar or concrete (with appropriate attachments).

Key Features to Consider When Choosing a Hammer Drill

Not all hammer drills are created equal. Here are the most important features to evaluate:

1. Power Source
Hammer drills come in two primary types:

Corded Hammer Drills:

Ideal for heavy-duty work requiring consistent power.

Typically more powerful than cordless models.

Best suited for stationary or long-duration tasks.

Cordless Hammer Drills:

Portable and convenient for outdoor or remote jobs.

Powered by lithium-ion batteries, which vary in capacity.

Look for models with 18V or 20V batteries for optimal performance.

2. Motor Power

For corded models, look for motors rated between 7 and 10 amps.

For cordless models, voltage determines power; 18V to 20V is common for heavy-duty tasks.

3. Modes of Operation

Drill-Only Mode: For softer materials like wood or metal.

Hammer Drill Mode: For masonry, concrete, or stone.

Chisel Mode (Rotary Hammer Drills): If you need demolition capabilities.

4. Chuck Type

Keyless Chuck: Convenient for quick bit changes.

SDS Chuck: Found on rotary hammer drills, designed for secure bit retention during heavy-duty applications.

5. Speed and Torque

Variable Speed Settings: Allows you to adjust speed for precision and control.

High Torque: Essential for drilling into dense materials.

6. Blows Per Minute (BPM)

Higher BPM indicates faster hammering action, making it easier to penetrate hard surfaces.

7. Ergonomics and Comfort

Lightweight models reduce fatigue during extended use.

Look for features like rubberized grips, side handles, and anti-vibration technology for added comfort.

8. Accessories and Features

Depth Stop Rods: Ensure consistent hole depth.

LED Work Lights: Illuminate your workspace in low-light conditions.

Dust Collection Ports: Minimize cleanup and improve visibility while drilling.

Use Cases and Matching the Drill to Your Project

1. Home Improvement Projects:

If you’re a homeowner or DIY enthusiast, a cordless hammer drill with moderate power (18V or 20V) is ideal for projects like hanging shelves, mounting fixtures, or minor masonry work.

Example: Drilling anchor holes into brick for curtain rods or outdoor lights.

2. Masonry Work:

For professional masons or heavy-duty masonry tasks, a corded hammer drill with 7–10 amps and a durable chuck is essential.

Example: Installing anchors in concrete walls for structural support.

3. Trades and Construction:

Contractors working on job sites will benefit from a high-powered rotary hammer drill with SDS bits for handling dense materials.

Example: Drilling through reinforced concrete slabs or creating access points for wiring and plumbing.

4. Occasional DIY or Light Repairs:

For occasional tasks, a lightweight, budget-friendly hammer drill is sufficient.

Example: Drilling small holes in concrete for hanging planters or securing furniture.

Tips for Choosing the Best Hammer Drill

1. Assess Your Needs:

Consider the types of materials and projects you’ll be working on.

Choose a model that aligns with your typical workload (light DIY versus heavy construction).

Look for models with anti-vibration features to reduce fatigue.

4. Evaluate Battery Life for Cordless Models:

For cordless drills, consider buying extra batteries to avoid downtime during long projects.

5. Stay Within Budget Without Sacrificing Quality:

Entry-level models can cost $50–$100, while high-performance rotary hammer drills can exceed $300.

Why Start This Blog?

The ToolFinder Blog was born out of a passion for tools and the belief that everyone deserves access to high-quality resources to support their goals. Whether you’re building a career, mastering a craft, or simply enjoying a weekend DIY project, the right tools—and the right knowledge—can make all the difference.

We also recognize the gaps in information available online. Many tools are advertised without clear explanations of their uses or value, leaving buyers confused. Our mission is to close that gap with content that is not only informative but also approachable and actionable.
